As if their normal lines weren’t already a headache, DMV offices across the country are reporting record-breaking wait times now that the Real ID deadline less than two weeks away. Frequent fliers and summer vacation hopefuls have been rushing to get one squared away before the nationwide travel mandate goes into effect.

Beginning Wednesday, May 7, Americans aged 18 and over will no longer be able to board a domestic flight with just a state-issued driver’s license or ID card. Because an estimated 19 percent of travelers still do not have an acceptable form of identification, miles-long TSA checkpoints might also become a reality.

Luckily, travelers without a Real ID can still fly with a valid passport or passport card on hand. If your passport is the only TSA-approved ID you have right now, it’s critical that you keep it safe and sound. To help you do just that, we’ve gathered six passport holders and RFID wallets that will help you keep it secure on future trips, starting at $11. Plus, keep scrolling for more information about Real ID.

Pascacoo Passport Wallet

Amazon

This Pascacoo passport wallet is slim, simple, and functional. Featuring a travel document pocket, four card slots, two SIM card slots, a hidden cash pocket, a main passport pocket, and a stretchy elastic closure band, this pocket-sized passport holder is perfect for minimalist travelers. For a stronger sense of security while traveling, it even comes with a built-in AirTag slot for GPS tracking.

Spigen Life Passport Wallet

Amazon

The low-profile Spigen Life passport wallet adds minimal bulk to your pocket while boasting RFID-blocking capabilities and organizational elements. Inside are four credit card slots, a passport pocket, a SIM card slot, and a pen holder, while the exterior has a slim ticket sleeve for your boarding pass. Two built-in D-rings on each end allow you to clip GPS trackers onto it, and the locking button closure prevents any of your items from slipping out. Over 1,500 Amazon shoppers gave it a perfect five-star rating, with many reviewers commenting on the “sleek and modern design,” “convenience,” and “high quality.”

Fintie Passport Holder With AirTag Holder

Amazon

This fun, patterned passport holder comes with a matching AirTag holder already clipped on, allowing you to keep track of your most important documents in the event it gets lost or stolen. Along with four card slots, a ticket slot, and a cash pocket, this passport holder has a wrist strap that can be clipped onto your belt loop, backpack, or carry-on bag.

Venture 4th Passport Neck Wallet

Amazon

Losing or having your passport stolen can be a real pain in the neck, especially if it’s your only viable travel ID. Keep your passport close to your chest—literally—with the Venture 4th neck wallet, on sale for $18. Made with durable, water-resistant ripstop nylon, this wallet is spacious enough to keep your phone, passport, keys, credit cards, earbuds, and travel documents secure. The adjustable neck strap can be lengthened to create a crossbody bag, and the slim silhouette allows you to wear it discreetly under jackets and sweaters to ward off pickpockets.

Melsbrinna Passport Holder

Amazon

This $11 passport holder has everything you need to stay organized while traveling internationally, including four RFID-blocking credit card pockets, a passport book pocket, and even two phone SIM card slots. Available in 36 colors, it also has a standalone clear window pocket stitched into the middle, making it easier than ever to whip out your Real ID at a TSA checkpoint. Conveniently, this clear window pocket has two sides, providing an additional slot for a driver’s license, passport card, veteran ID, or student ID.

Polare Leather Family Passport Wallet

Amazon

Thoughtfully organized and big enough to hold six passport books, the Polare passport wallet is “great for family travel.” Made with real full-grain leather, this large zippered wallet also has four RFID-blocking credit card pockets, a clear ID window, two hidden cash sleeves, a pen holder, and a large exterior pocket suited for boarding passes or other travel documents.

What to Know About Real ID

What is a Real ID?

A Real ID or Enhanced ID is an identification card that’s mandated and regulated by the federal government. Originally passed by Congress in 2005 following the events of 9/11, the Real ID Act was created to increase national security and develop a standardized identification system across the 50 states.

Unlike state-issued driver’s licenses and non-driver IDs, Real ID and Enhanced ID cards will have some kind of star marking on the upper right-hand corner.

What is the latest deadline for Real ID?

The Real ID compliance deadline is May 7, 2025.

From this day forward, only airline passengers with a Real ID, Enhanced ID, valid passport, passport card, or other form of TSA-approved identification will be allowed to board domestic flights. This means that those attempting to fly with a state-issued driver’s license or non-driver ID will be turned away at the airport and unable to make their flight.

Can I still travel in the U.S. without a Real ID?

Yes, you can still fly domestically after the May 7 deadline as long as you have a valid U.S. passport, passport card, or other form of identification deemed acceptable by the TSA.

So, if your Real ID or Enhanced ID hasn’t been delivered yet via mail—or you still need to book an appointment to get one—fear not. Driver’s licenses and other DMV-issued identification cards, however, will not be accepted at TSA checkpoints.
