Whether you’re schlepping through a busy airport or settling in for an hours-long train ride, dressing comfortably while on the move—be it by plane, train, or automobile—is imperative. I’ve always lived by this motto, but now, as a new mom of twins, prioritizing comfort takes on a whole new meaning, which is why I’ve stocked up on several pairs of the Spanx AirEssentials Tapered Pants. Loved by countless travelers—including yours truly—these always-sold-out pants are well worth the hype, especially now that they’re on sale in black.
While I love how comfortable my go-to leggings are, I prefer something a bit more polished for traveling. That way, I can hit the ground running wherever I go—be it a work meeting, a meal with friends, or a sightseeing tour—without having to stop somewhere and change. They’re also incredibly versatile: I’ve worn them with everything from leather jackets and heeled booties to everyday tanks and tees with sneakers or slip-ons.

What’s especially great about these travel pants—and the entire Spanx AirEssentials collection—is their ultra-lightweight knit fabric. A mixture of modal, polyester, and elastane, this fabric is soft to the touch, drapes beautifully, and features a fantastic four-way stretch for unrestricted movement. It’s also incredibly breathable, helping to keep you warm in cooler temperatures while remaining cool in the heat. I’ve worn them on freezing planes, in New York snowstorms, and in balmy Florida weather, and I was equally comfortable on all three occasions.
The pants’ drawcord waistband ensures a custom fit, and unlike most, the ties won’t get tangled in the wash or dryer (I’ve worn and washed them at least 20 times, so I can confidently vouch for this). Plus, the waistband doesn’t dig into the skin or cause irritation, a discomfort I’ve experienced from other brands many times over.

While these pants aren’t technically joggers, they do feature a tapered fit and ankle cuff detailing that gives them a jogger-like fit. I like to think of these pants as a more polished take on leggings and sweatpants, and I love that I can either match them with the brand’s full-zip hoodie or half-zip sweatshirt or style them with my favorite tank or sweater.
While these pants are hands down one of my favorites for travel, I’m also partial to the AirEssentials Wide Leg Pant, which offers a flowy, more relaxed vibe. I also recommend checking out the AirEssentials Jogger, which has elastic cuffs and a true jogger pant silhouette, especially now that they’re on sale for $59. As of writing this, the Spanx AirEssentials Tapered Pants are available in four neutral hues and come in sizes XS to 3X, with straight, petite, and tall length options. Since I’m 5’3″, I opted for the petite version, which hit perfectly at my ankle. The fit is slightly oversized, which I appreciated for comfort’s sake, but if you prefer a more snug fit or are between sizes, consider sizing down.
