With fitness resolutions in full swing and smartwatches getting smarter by the day, not to mention the rise of the “hot girl walk” in everyday conversation, the shoes you wear on the go are trendier and more expensive than ever. Still, I can’t help but feel skeptical about this trend, particularly when it comes with a hefty price tag. Thankfully, my On Cloud X3 shoes have managed to stay under the radar — until now.
The reason I decided to buy my first pair of On shoes (which have now turned into three) wasn’t because all the most stylish people I know had them or the sheer number of them at my local gym. The turning point for me was when I discovered that I could parry with a broadsword in my three-hour stage and screen combat class, go on a half-day hike, grocery shop in the snow, and climb up to my fifth-floor New York City apartment — all in one pair of shoes. No matter how skeptical I am of a trend, I can’t resist a clever productivity solution.

Last summer I found myself in the flower-filled mountains of Aspen, Colo. Although the word “hiking” was mentioned multiple times in the group chat, I didn’t quite grasp how serious my hosts were about the adventure. My On-clad toes had barely touched the tarmac before I was whisked on a four-hour hike up the Maroon Bells. Having only just acclimated to the sidewalks of Manhattan, my On Cloud X3 shoes were thrust into the wilderness of Colorado’s mountainous terrain. Instead of yearning for a more robust hiking boot, I felt liberated that my city shoes could keep up with the rustic itinerary — and even better, they handled the daily spin in the washing machine like a champ.

Last year, I spent eight months in London training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. My day would kick off at 8 a.m. with some form of breathwork or tai chi, followed by a variety of classes including movement, Shakespeare analysis, and sword-fighting. The day usually wrapped up around 9 p.m., which meant my backpack was essentially my entire life. I quickly learned how crucial it was to have an outfit that could keep up with my busy schedule, while also being comfortable and stable. By the second week, I had it down to a science: Alo leggings, On Cloud X3 shoes, and an extra-large drip coffee from Pret was my go-to combo to power through my grueling days.

From hiking in Colorado to late-night theater rehearsals in London and weekend pickleball in Brooklyn, the On Cloud X3s feel solid and provide great grip on any surface, all while fitting snugly into whatever bag I’m carrying for the day. I bought mine for $150, but they’re now available for $105 in eight colors on the brand’s website. I have only ever owned one pair of On shoes at a time, but after seeing a viral TikTok about the new limited-edition On Cloudtilt shoes, I’m definitely feeling the pull to get another pair.
