For most—if not all—a trip to the DMV isn’t high on the list of fun things to do. In fact, it feels like a chore, which is why I’ve put off upgrading my current form of identification to a Real ID. If you’re like me, it could soon cost you—$45 to be exact.
Starting February 1, 2026, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is introducing a $45 fee for those traveling without a Real ID or other form of acceptable identification (like a passport or Global Entry. The TSA says that the $45 will allow you to use a “modernized alternative identity verification system” to confirm your identity at security checkpoints.
So, if you want to avoid what’s basically another flight fee, upgrade your current ID and don’t forget to pack it (as I often do). The best way to make sure it’s always on you is to keep it with something you never leave behind, like your phone or keys. I love using a MagSafe wallet to keep my ID and credit cards close. If I’m traveling with a passport, I use a brightly-colored wallet to hold everything so I can quickly look into my personal item bag to see if it’s there or not. The passport wallets and ID holders below can help you come up with a personal travel hack to avoid that $45 fee. And they’re almost all on sale, with prices starting at just $5.
