Goswami will assume his role as chief information and digital officer at the Renton, Washington-based health system on May 12, according to a news release.

His appointment comes roughly two months after Providence announced it was streamlining its leadership team, cutting a few positions and rolling out a new Office of Transformation focusing on leveraging artifical intelligence and other technology initiatives across the system.

At the time, Providence named Ivette de Rubens, the system’s SVP of strategy, informatics and clinical experience, as interim chief information officer while it hunted for a permanent appointment.

The system has landed on Goswami, who has held healthcare leadership roles at the University of Wisconsin Health System and BJC Healthcare in St. Louis. The executive has also worked in other industries, including finance, telecommunications and transportation.

Goswami will be responsible for overseeing Providence’s information strategy and operations, including cybersecurity and AI deployment.

He will also collaborate closely with Sara Vaezy, who runs Providence’s Office of Transformation, a spokesperson for Providence told Healthcare Dive. Vaezy will focus on consumer use cases for AI, while Goswami will head up internal use cases.

“The chief information and digital officer role is critical for helping Providence support our transformation efforts, drive technological advancements and investments, safeguard sensitive health information, and ultimately improve patient outcomes,” Providence CEO Erik Wexler said in a statement about Goswami’s appointment.

The nonprofit giant has increasingly been championing AI and technology as part of its overall strategy.

Providence has developed its own tools to address clinician burnout, partnered with an external vendor to incorporate AI into its revenue cycle functions and worked with Microsoft to build their own AI agents.

In January, Wexler signaled further harnessing AI was a priority in a LinkedIn post about his vision for the system’s path forward.

“It’s time for us to acknowledge that much of the technology we use in health care has not removed the crushing demands on our medical staff and caregivers,” the executive said. “We will immediately leverage solutions that make the biggest difference for physicians and caregivers at Providence.”
