Located in the small, picturesque town of Kennebunkport, Maine, Sandy Pines Campground is known for its lush forests, luxe glamping sites, and creative guest cottages—but there’s a new accommodation on its roster that’s generated a lot of buzz recently.
Guests can now have the Maine camping getaway of their dreams in a covered wagon, two of which are available for the upcoming camping season. The wagons look as if they were plucked straight out of a Western film and are complete with a circular canvas wrap and wooden spoke wheels. Prices for the wagons start at $206 per night.
Inside each wagon, visitors will find Western-inspired decor like cowhide rugs, chairs with nailhead trim accents, and fun Wild West-themed tchotchkes. Outside, the campsites offer a fire pit, Adirondack-style chairs, and a picnic table. Keep in mind that you will need to walk up four steps to access the wagons since they’re elevated off the ground.

“These wagons were popular for southward migration through the Great Appalachian Valley and the Great Wagon Road,” a spokesperson for Sandy Pines Campground said in a statement to Travel + Leisure. “Now, the double-dome canvas wagons make for a perfect place to stay.”
However, there are several amenities that Sandy Pines’ wagons have that weren’t available to the pioneers, including heat, air conditioning, and electricity, as well as plush linens and bath towels. Plus, if you forgot to bring anything with you on your trip, you can always head down to the Sandy Pines General Store to pick up essentials for the dusty trail.
As for things to do, there are no vast desert landscapes to explore here, but there are still plenty of outdoor activities available in the vicinity. There are 60 acres of land to explore at Sandy Pines, and the campground also has some of the best paddle boarding waters in the state. And if you’d like to hit the coast, Goose Rocks Beach is just two miles away and is known for its picturesque white sands.
